Dogs are popular pets.  Their are tall, weak, short, heavey, and light. 35% of the people in    the United States have dogs in their home. Forsils of the dog goes back into Mesolithic          Period,  about 12 thousand years ago. The heaviest dogs are St. Bernard and Mastiff. They     can weigjht up to 200  pounds. The tallest dog is Iris Wolfhound. The samllest dog is Teacup   Chihuahua, which only weights about one pound. Dogs can see colour, but their are red-        green colour-blind. Humans can see much better in colour than dogs. Have you wondered      how a dog hears a dog whistle? The Highest pitch a human can hear is 20,000 sound waves     per second and a dog can hear up to 40,000 sound waves per second. A only time the human  might hear a dog whistle is when they are very young.  Dogs are carnivorous ( meat-eaters)
mallals and are part of Canidae family which also inculdes wolves, coyotes and foxes. Domestic dogs were bred from wild dogs and the ancestors of wild dogs were grey wolves! A breed of dog called the Saluki appears on the ancient tombs of Egypt from around 2100 BC.
Originally dogs were only kept to guard, herd and hunt never as pets. Young dogs are call
puppies and their mum is a bitch and their dad is a dog. There are normally 5 - 8 pups in a
litter. Puppies are born blind and deaf. For the first 2 - 3 weeks, they only drink their
mum's milk. Once a puppy can hear, they are also able to bark. At two weeks old they get
their baby teeth. Young puppies need 3 - 4 meals a day. After 8 - 9 weeks, they can leave
Mum for their new homes.
