| What does the Presbytery of Ottawa Youth Worker Do???????? |
|
|
| Most importantly, I'm here for you--the Presbyterian Church in Ottawa; to support youth ministry in the Presbyterian Church in this area. I am a resource for churches, ministers, youth workers, Sunday School teachers, and student leaders. I am available to consult and assist with training and resources. I look forward to invitations to visit churches, youth committees, youth groups, youth leadership teams, etc. |

| Secondly, I provide a communication service through this newsletter, posters and reports to Presbytery. |
|
|
| Finally I help to organize and coordinate Presbytery services and events to provide opportunities for youth from local congregations to experience worship, service and fellowship with the larger Church community. |

| Do the PresbyYouth/World Vision 30 Hour Famine |
|
|

|
|
|
Every day 30 500 children die from hunger and preventable diseases. Compare that to 1988 when the figure was 40 000. We can make a difference. |
|
|
| World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization reaching out to a hurting world. |
|
|
| This year encourage your high school aged youth to join with others from the Presbytery and sign up for the 30 Hour Famine. The money they raise will save lives. It will feed hungry children, give them the medicine they desperately need and remove them from hazardous conditions. |
|
|
| Youth can sign up on the presbyyouth message board (www.geocities.com/presbyyouth) I?ll give each youth a Donation Form and Collection Envelope when I receive a signed parental permission form. |
|
|
| If you need another Donation Sheet ? great!!!! Just ask, but don?t photocopy or lose the sheets. The sheets are numbered legal documents. |
|
|
| Youth don't have to participate in the planned activities at Westminster to participate in the Famine. Youth can collect donations and fast on your own. |
|
|
| If there are youth in your congregation who are too young to participate but who would like to do something ? World Vision suggests a junior famine. Elementary aged children can give up T.V. or video games, or talking on the phone and raise money without fasting. Youth unable to fast for whatever reason can also give up something else as an alternative. |
|

| Tips for 30 Hr Famine Fundraising: |
|
|
|
|
| Set a goal. Everyone who does the 30 Hour Famine should set a personal goal, like $3 for every hour you fast. That?s only $90. |
|
|
| Make a list of people you can ask. Include: parents, brothers or sisters, friends, teachers, coaches, doctor, dentist, etc ? Be creative and ask donors if they know anyone else who could give. |
|
|
| Get the money up front. That way you only have to ask once and the money will go to help the kids as fast as possible. |
|
|
| Always be prepared. Keep you Famine Donation Sheet and Collection Envelope with you. You never know when a chance to ask for a donation will come up. |
|
|
| Don?t be shy. Remember, you are raising money to help children all over the world. |
|
|
| Don?t forget you can earn great prizes for raising $65, $170, $300 or $600. |
|
|
There is also an essay contest for those who raise over $250. 10 semi-finalists will win a trip to World Vision Headquarters in Toronto and a chance to win one of 3 overseas adventures.�����������

Snow Blast |
|
|
| The Presbytery Snow Blast for Younger Youth� took place at St. Timothy?s Presbyterian Church on February 10. Thirteen younger youth from St. Timothy?s, Grace, and Knox?Manotick came to participate in games, snacks, worship and a brief devotional. |
|
|
|
Games were played indoors because of the weather; specifically the wind chill. Prizes were awarded for things like having fun, good sportsmanship, and cooperation rather than for winning the games. Was that fair? The devotional focused on the difference between our standards and God?s standards as illustrated in the parable of the landowner and the vineyard workers in Matthew 20. God decides what He will reward. We cannot win (please God) apart from Christ. |
|

| Who to Help |

|
| Though youth workers love students and know there are many kids out there who need attention, it's sometimes hard to decide with whom to schedule time. So many demands and so little time!� This brief list of questions will help youth workers focus. By filling in a few lines with specific names, youth workers will end up with several specific students to schedule time with AND topics of conversation that are relevant to those particular students. |

Presbytery Youth Services |
|
|
| Presbytery Youth Services exist to provide young people from local congregations the opportunity to worship, study, minister and fellowship with the larger Church Community. |
|
|
| Services begin at 7 pm. Youth are encouraged to come at 3 pm to participate in presenting the message?an excellent service opportunity! The group breaks at five for dinner (either at a nearby restaurant or a bagged meal) |
|
|
| The services present a message relevant to youth in very creative ways ? skits, music, reading etc? |
|
|
| Following the service youth enjoy a time of fellowship with snacks in the hall. |
|
|
| How can you encourage� youth from your congregation to attend Presbytery youth services and events? |
|
|
| Promote the services and events through announcements at youth activities, Sunday School, bulletin announcements and posters. |

| Host a service or event at your church. |
|
|
| Attend services and events with youth from your congregation or arrange for their transportation to and from the service. |

| What's New in Presbytery Churches? |

| St. Andrew?s Presbyterian Church |
|
|
| The St. Andrew?s Presbyterian Church Youth Group is a group of� young people with a heart for missions in their community. This group came together in September and meet one Friday night each month. They have already accomplished some great things. They have done babysitting to raise funds. They have served at the Knox out of the cold program and collected items and made care packages for youth shelters.� |

| Welcome Megan Macdonald, the new youth leader at St. Giles. Megan is from Charlottetown, PEI. A recent graduate from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Megan studied German and Drama. Megan likes reading, dancing, cooking, photography and sports. Megan says that youth groups and church activities played a large role in her childhood and she is excited to be able to be a part of St. Giles. |

| Fund Raiser Idea |

|
Need a Great Fund Raiser???
Have your group bag groceries for tips on a Saturday. |
|
|
| Talk with the manager at your local discount grocery store. Your services are particularly welcome at stores such as these because they typically don?t hire full-time baggers. Your youth can simplify the cashier?s job and help lines move more quickly. |
|
|
| Tell the manager that your group would like to provide a service for them and at the same time, raise funds for your group. Also, let her know that your kids will man all the registers throughout the day, will wear name tags and will collect tips only at the entrances and exits of the stores. |
|
|
| Make name tags that include your church?s name, the group member?s name, the phrase ?Bagging for tips? and what your funds will be used for ? for example a Mexico trip fundraiser, or For the food bank. The name tags can be as simple or as elaborate as you want, but make them uniform. |
|
