Autism is a neurodevelopmental brain disorder that is characterized by deficits in social interactions and ability to communicate (verbal and nonverbal).  Autism typically appears during the first three years of life.  People with autism often have atypical patterns of interest or behavior.  Autism is one of the five disorders listed under the category of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) (Batshaw, 2002), which is also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
