- Autism is a neurodevelopmental brain disorder that is characterized by
deficits in social interactions and ability to communicate (verbal and
nonverbal). Autism typically appears during the first three years of life. People
with autism often have atypical patterns of interest or behavior.
Autism is one of the five disorders listed under the category of
Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) (Batshaw, 2002), which is also
known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
