Katie's Péridier Library Capstone Page |
| The Capstone Project is used to fulfill the requirement for my Master of Science in Information Studies that traditionally is a master's thesis. More information is available about the Capstone Projects from the School of Information . The Péridier Library is the department library for the University of Texas at Austin Astronomy Department. The Péridier serves UT-Austin Astronomy faculty and graduate students as well as the researchers at the MacDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, Texas. My project was to design a stack shift (move the books to better suit the physical space and the needs of the library patrons) and implement changes, where possible. My project has focused on analysis of the collection, needs of the library, and finding the best ways to plan for future shelf space needs. |

Floor Plans (created in Adobe Illustrator)
The current situation in the library reveals several problem areas. The actual book collection is very snug on the shelves, there is very little space available on most shelves. The growth in the journal collection is changing and some journals will not continue to grow. What this meant for my project was in measurement and prediction of binding patterns to ensure that at least 5 years of space is available.
Note that in the proposed floor plan, there are additional blue shelves (for the actual book collection), and that the materials on the yellow shelves will be moved to a different library location. References and resources for shifting stacks.
