You can avoid all of the complicated issues involved with a divorce by having a strong, valid pre-nuptial agreement, entered into in advance of the marriage date. These types of agreements are not just for people with money, they are for anyone who is about to be married. They simply set out: everything I have is mine; everything you have is yours; anything we put both of our names on in the future will be considered marital; and the rest stays non-marital. We highly recommend these, regardless of your economic situation.
Similarly, once the marriage has taken place, you can enter into what is known as a Post-Nuptial Agreement which says basically that from this point forward, the only thing that will be considered, in the event of a legal separation or dissolution, will be anything we have put our names on jointly. Both of these are invaluable, and can save you a fortune. Your partner needs to get over being offended by these legal tools. Its not personal its contractual.
