| My Experience with Nose Rings | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| My first nostril was pierced before I can remember, probably before I was 10. I used to wear a small gold stud throughout my teenage years. During this time, (guess early 1960s) it was quite common for women to wear studs on both nostrils - I would say well over half of married women wore two studs. I believe during the later 60s that fewer women went for two studs. I had not thought much about my nose studs, and neither did my parents when they started looking for a suitable match for me. Some of my friends got their second nostril pierced just before their parents started looking for matches. Well, they found a match for me, and things we getting firmed up. Then my mother-in-law requested my mother that I wear double nose studs. In those days this not an uncommon request, my parents agreed without even telling me! (Yes, that is how things were then) So a few days later my second nostril was pierced. As was the custom, new diamond nose studs were made for my marriage. I started wearing these a few days prior to my marriage. They are the traditional Tamil style multi-stone diamond studs, quite large and heavy. I have worn these studs for 35 years now. I will attempt to describe my studs as best as I can here. The first stud consists of five diamond stones, one large and four smaller. The large diamond is mounted like a simple stud nose ring with an internally threaded post. The four smaller diamonds are mounted in a crescent in a earring-jacket type arrangement. The large diamond stud is inserted through this jacket to form the complete nose ring. The total arrangement has the large diamond at the top with four smaller diamonds hanging below in a crescent shape. This is a common design and can be seen on many women in the south. |

| My other nose stud consists of eight small diamonds arranged in the shape of a trapezoid. (trapezoid is a diamond shape) This design has spot where a ninth diamond would have gone in and this spot adds to the intricacy of the design. The post is actually located directly below this empty spot. Most women wearing studs on both sides will wear different designs on either side. This is just a common practice. I do not have any preference as which stud I wear on which side. I just wear them randomly. I take my studs out only to take oil-baths and put them back in a few hours. Other than that I rarely take them out. They have become a part of me. |
