Last two ISA detainees to be sent
Kamunting
10:05am, Thu: breaking news Keadilan leaders Dr Badrul
Amin Bahron and Lokman Noor Adam, the remaining two of
the 10 ISA detainees who were arrested in a police
crackdown against reformasi activists, are to be sent to the
Kamunting detention camp in Perak.
According to the counsel for the duo, R Sivarasa, the
two-year detention orders were signed by Home Minister
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday. He told malaysiakini that
he is expected to receive copies of their detention orders
today.
Meanwhile, the habeas corpus applications of the two are
to be heard in Shah Alam High Court beginning today.
Habeas corpus is a writ ordering prisoners to be brought
before a court or judge to ascertain whether their detention
is lawful. It is often applied for by lawyers for those held
under the Internal Security Act which allows detention
without trial for a minimum of two years following an initial
60-day investigative period.
Both Badrul Amin and Lokman will join four others - Keadilan
vice-president Tian Chua, Keadilan party Youth chief
Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor, supreme council member Saari
Sungib and social activist-cum-malaysiakini columnist
Hishamuddin Rais - who were sent to Kamunting camp on
June 3 after being interrogated by police for more than 45
days.
Four have been released - two by order of the Shah Alam
High Court and the other two by the police.
The 10 reformasi leaders were arrested in a police dragnet
in early April to pre-empt what police chief Norian Mai
described as a ‘militant attempt’ to overthrow the
government through violent street demonstrations. |
