My Poetry

For your perusal, here are some poems that I've written in my college Creative Writing: Poetry workshops. Enjoy. (Or not.)

poet's block

here i sit
staring at this screen
trying to find Inspiration
to come to some Great Epiphany
to display insight into the True Nature of Things
and in avant-garde fashion define
love,
people,
angst,
and the meaning of life.
yeah, all that pretentious bullshit.

i try to summon pathos
from a heart sucked dry by cynicism
(or is that realism?)
and i struggle to find higher meaning
in a world devoid of it.
what has not been said?
what great mysteries have not been addressed
over
and over
and over again,
run into the ground until banal and trite?

i try no longer to find deeper meaning
so i give this to you not to enlighten you
or inspire your precious little poet's hearts
but for a grade.

Addict

Do not look at me
with your dead end stare.
Uncomprehending
seeking no higher truths
seeing without understanding
stupid.
I cannot look at you
and your blank eyes
bloodshot and watery.
Dilated.
Blind.
Ugly.

Do not let your poison gaze
touch me
it makes my skin slither.
Abusing yourself
dulling your senses
because you are too weak to cope
or your mind is too feeble
to achieve understanding on its own.
Weak will.
Weak mind.
Weakling.

Do not look to me for sympathy
but feel free to pity yourself.
Poor angst-ridden you.
Helpless victim of self.
Contemptible.
I give up
so get it over with.
Please just go curl up
somewhere far away
and die.
Because I'm tired of giving a shit
sick of caring about you
when you do not.

Plunder

I barge through the dead stillness
I seek plunder, taking what I need
I leave with my spoils
The lonely structure frowns upon me in defeat

I climb claustrophobic stairs
I look at the ceiling and walls
Plywood stained dim by years of twilight
I continue down the hall

I look at the deserted bedroom to my left
Lifeless, housing no one
I press on toward the room at the hall's end
The door protests with a squeak as it opens

The weak lighting filtering through the shrouded windows
Reveals the room is askew, ransacked long ago
Save for knick-knacks and things too bulky to steal
Looted by the hands I see plundering the room now

This was my home for fourteen years
Memories, dreams and life were born here
I lived and laughed and wept and bled here
And took my mother's generosity for granted

But the home that has always been there for me
Is no longer convenient, so I leave it
Though I occasionally take from here what I need
Ransacking the dead child that I am

More Evolved

hey there little animals
hello parakeet and cat
greetings lizard and insect
let me tell you where it's at

one word: Evolution!
yeah, that's the ticket
you poor lesser creatures
gerbil, dog, rat, cricket

worship me, lesser creatures
for I'm every measure your superior
but blame Mother Nature, not me
because you are inferior

you don't even understand
you see without comprehension
you don't know that you are lesser
a stupid filthy non-sentient

all creatures serve mankind
quite often as our meals
some are pets or beast of burden
and the fate of pests we seal

here's a good example
the great wolf running free
we took and bent him to our will
now Rover begs scraps from me

revere the godlike humans
with our incredible opposable thumb
bigger brains and upright walking
which you'd envy if you weren't so dumb

but our dominion doesn't stop there
for we control and use the earth
and none of you can stop us
but you can try, for what it's worth

you miserable lower life forms
we'll cause your extinctions too
it's too bad we can't all coexist
and we humans be more like you.

Genius (Big Number-Brain Man)

Please, share with me Your wisdom
Your infinite incalculable intelligence
can do nothing but improve
us poor hapless mortals.

School is no place for one such as You
their pathetic attempts to teach
could not challenge Your superior mind
and besides, You already know it all.

You assume that a big number
on a label attached to Your brain
makes You a god
and You expect us to agree.

Well, if You believe it
it must be so, for who are we
with smaller numbers on our brains
to question You?

Since You are always right
and are so quick to remind us of this
please lead us, and dissertate to us
and please share with us Your intellect.

Oh thank you Big Number-Brain Man!
