| An Interview with my Grandmother | ||||||||||
| S (Scott) - Grandma, only-childs are often stereotyped as being spoiled and selfish, was this true for me? G (Grandma) - Oh no, no, no. We did spoil you with love and gifts, but you were a very sweet, thoughtful child. I remember during Christmas, many of the boxes under the tree were yours, but you always seemed so surprised there were so many. You were so happy with one gift that anything else was just icing on the cake. It really seemed like you appreciated the thought more than the gift. S - So, you think I was spoiled, but not selfish? G - Well, you did'nt have any brothers or sisters, so we may have been spoiling you with gifts because there werent any others to give to. But definetally not selfish. S - What about my personality when i was younger. Did you consider me a little bit goofy? G - You were a very tricky and smart kid. You were always a step ahead of everybody else, and you really enjoyed practical jokes. You were always laughing and joking around, but I wouldnt consider that 'goofy'. You have always had a very sharp sense of humor, much like your father. S - Do you remember any practical jokes that I had done? G - I remember when you first got your hands on a whoopy cushion. That was a lot of fun (mutual laughter). S - Do I remind you of anybody in our family? G - You remind me a lot of your father. You both have very good senses of humor and you enjoy the same things, like outdoor stuff...camping, traveling. You both have the gene that makes you want to stare at the sunset for hours. S - But he's not an only child. G - No, he has 2 brothers, your uncles. But he is the middle child, which I think gets the same rap that only-childs do. S - True. So we both have something to blame our conditions on. G - Yes (laughter). S - Is there anything else that you would like to say about me when I was younger? G - We remember and think of you as the cute little guy who was so much fun to have around. We used to have so much fun golfing with you when you were younger. You were very good! So polite and kind, you were a treat to have around. We always knew that you would turn out good, and we are so proud of the person you have turned out to be. S - Thank you, Grandma. G - You're very welcome. |
