Comments:  Ah, Reamon, how wonderful art thou, she's a Goddess of the oceans, you know.  I came up with this character after I saw an episode of Card Captor Sakrua.  In the episode, Tomoyo was imagining what sort of costume she'd design for Sakura if she were to go swimming.  She came up with a Sakura fish costume, which is what directly inspired me.  Reamon's colouring, shape, and even her pose are taken from that image.  Though, of course, I've added a lot more.
The first thing I had to do was her face.  There is an unwritten rule that says that any Digimon that could pass for a human being has to have either the upper or the lower half of their face covered.  I didn't want to put any kind of mask on Reamon, so I made sure she couldn't pass for a human being by giving her very large eyes.

Her head dress was a nightmare to do. I couldn't even visualise it for ages.  I'd actually done most of the pic before I finished it.  I ended up looking through some pictures of fish to get the spines, which are taken from the Lion fish (why are sea creatures always named after land ones?).  The colour took me even longer.  Once again, I'd added the basic colour for rest of the picture before I settled on the colours for her head dress.  That green came out of nowhere, but it works, thankfully.
After I drew her body I had to decide how I would cover it up (Digimon can't be naked, you know).  The sleeves were quite easy, as Sakura was wearing ones like them in the costume Tomoyo thought up.  But what for the rest?  She's an underwater Digimon, so she can't wear too many clothes, they'll get in the way in the water.  I couldn't come up with anything so I watched some more of Card Captor Sakura, as Sakura always wears really great outfits.  As I watched Tomoyo started daydreaming about the costumes she'd designed for Sakura, who appeared in them one after the other, I watched and went, 'No, no, no, no, not that either, no, no n- oh, wait a minute.'  Eventually, I saw one small shape on one of Sakura's costumes that looked good (no I can't remember which outfit it was, there are too many of them).  I tried it on the abdomen, and it worked!  It required a lot of playing around to get the left and right sides correct, but once I'd done it all I needed to add were a few small circles to set it off.  The colour I left until I'd done the main colour of the body and the sleeves.  Eventually I decided on blue, I wasn't sure about it, but it works.

The tail wasn't as maddening as you might think.  My main problem was remembering where one section ended and another began amongst the mass of lines.  During the inking stage I had to draw certain lines thicker, which I wouldn't normally do right away, but otherwise I got completely lost as to what I was doing.  The main struggle with the colour was getting the light and shade right.  Where should the light hit, and where should the darkest parts be?  The light source is coming from the left, but that wouldn't necessarily have a lot of impact on the tail, so I just had to go by what felt right.
My main problem with the ribbons was getting them in the right positions so the composition (the placement of things on the page) was right.  I started off with those coming from her neck, then moved onto the ones coming from her ankles.  It may not look like it, but there are only six ribbons in all.  Inking them was a little tough, and I messed some bits up.  The colour was quite easy to come up with, and the light and shade wasn't a problem.
I finished it up by adding thicker lines in certain areas and then doing a really thick line all the way around, and where the ribbons moved past the body.  I'm very, very happy with this picture.  I've always wanted to do something like this, and it turned out to be easier than I thought.

Look how much better she looks now that I've added a border for her in The GIMP!  This is the original, if you'd like to see what she looks like without that background; Reamon Original

I have also made two wallpapers of this pic for anyone to use.  Check out my DA account to see them (link on front page).
