| Comments: Isn't he just
so...groovy?. When I drew this I had yet to come up
with Beatmon's Champion Digivolution, Raptomon, so
Groovmon came directly from Beatmon. And, of
course, Beatmon loves to dance, so I started there. The only thing I new to start off with was a basic idea for a pose and what the face should roughly look like. I knew nothing else, not even what shape the body would be. This defiantly was one of those I made up as I went. His torso came first, then his legs and the rough position of his arms. Of course, that's a far cry from adding all those extras, but the first thing any artist does when designing a new character is get the form right. There's nothing worse than adding bits on and then realising that you've got to rub it all out. I knew he needed wings, but had no idea what they should look like, and didn't want to just to the Angemon/womon route, so came up with this. They're very simple, but they follow the basic rules for wings. I had a hell of a time with those lines, I got completely lost with them. Which bit was meant to be blue, and which bit is supposed to be brown. Not only that, but drawing them so that they went around the wings was tough, but if I hadn't done it, the wings would have looked completely two-dimensional (Okay, okay, I know they ARE completely two-dimensional, but the idea is to give the illusion of depth, so shut up). Once again, with the clothes, I completely made it up as I went along. I was a little worried about the shirt - or more specifically, the lack of a shirt - but the high band around the waist makes up for it. The most complicated thing were the boots. I ripped off the basic design from Magnaangemon, then added a groovy twist. But it took ages to get them right, to add enough but not too much. Then I had to colour them, and with so many different parts it was a test to get it right. I only realised that I wanted him to have a tail toward the end of the sketch. He just seemed like he needed something to keep him from looking like a disco angel. So I ripped of Gatomon's tail design, multiplied it by five, and added them on. He looks like a disco cowboy, which I love. It's not even just the boots that do it, it's everything. He looks like a guy who would rebel with the medium of dance, and enjoy impressing all the girls at the same time. I love this Digimon! |
