I have started a list of "liberal Texans" to combat the notion that Texas is inherently a conservative state. If anyone would like to suggest additional names, please contact me at [email protected] . Thanks. Here's the list so far:

LIBERAL TEXANS

Bill Moyers (raised in Marshall, Texas) Currently hosts tv show NOW on PBS, which rips apart every stupid thing Bush does.

Sandy Duncan (born in Henderson, Texas) --Has publicly expressed concerns over Bush's rush to war

Ann Richards (born in Lakeview, Texas) -- the real Texan, who pointed out that our President's father was "born with a silver foot in his mouth." A very popular governor until Bush Jr ran on his father's record and name recognition. (Too bad he doesn't share his father's respect for the international community.)

Barbara Lee (born in El Paso, Texas) --The strongest opponent in the House of Representatives to Bush's rush to war.

Sheila Jackson Lee (Congressional Rep from Houston, Texas) --Introduced House Congressional Resolution 2 to reverse the October resolution allowing Bush free reign to attack Iraq. Resolution sent off to a committee for "consideration," where it was obviously ignored by cynics.

Natalie Maines (born in Lubbock, Texas) --Now famous for publicly stating what an embasrrassment it was that Bush called himself a "Texan." I concur.

Tommy Lee Jones (born in San Saba, Texas) -- Al Gore's roommate in college, who introduced him when he ran for President.

Larry Hagman (born in Fort Worth, Texas)--Has supported some Republicans, but mosty Democrats and
contributed to Gore in 2000.

Ethan Hawke (born in Austin, Texas)--Star in Dead Poet's Society. Has contributed to the DNC plus several Democratic candidates.

Dennis Quaid (born in Houston, Texas)--Gave $4200 to the Montana State Democratic Central Committee in 2000

Aaron Spelling (born in Dallas, Texas)--Has given profusely to various Democratic candidates running for office.

Morgan Fairchild (born in Dallas, Texas)--Gave $250 to the Ron Kirk campaign in 2002 when he ran as a
Democrat for Senate, although she also supported McCain in 1999 and 2000. (Let's call her an "independent. ")

Kris Kristofferson (Brownsville, Texas) -- recently signed a Vets for Peace statement and was active in Central American issues in the 80's, among other things.

Molly Ivins (From Houston and now living in Austin) -- Liberal columnist for the Creators Syndicate, who
regularly blasts Bush's policies in her column.

Carol Burnett (San Antonio, Texas) -- According to an article in the Buffalo News (08/27/2000), Carol joined several big name stars in a $1000 per plate feed for Hillary Rodham Clinton's Senate campaign in New York in 2000. So I would guess that she is probably another "liberal" Texan.

Steve Martin (Waco, Texas) -- Interestingly enough this Texan got his start writing for the Smother's Brothers. Their content was so anti-war and liberal that they had a big censorship battle over it. I can't find anything on the net about his current political bent, but he did make a joke at the Oscars recently about how the Hollywood actors were all Democrats. So it seems likely that he is yet another liberal Texan. :-)

Don Henley (Linden, TX) -- Eagles star who has contributed widely to various Democratic campaigns.

Lloyd Doggett (Austin, TX) -- Congressional representative for Austin, who was responsible for the concept of "sunset legislation" and also for the state's lemon law for automobiles.  Has worked for campaign finance reform and has opposed Bush's pre-emptive  war on Iraq.  Asa result, his district is currently being gerrymandered away, despite strong opposition in Austin.

Jim Hightower (Denison, TX) -- Follow Hightower's populist activities at http://www.jimhightower.com/
