Summary of April 14th
Coordinating Committee Meeting
WE NEED YOU ON OUR TEAM! A Capitol Action Team has been formed. Joe O'Neill will contact the team if he needs people quickly. If you are a metro-area member and can be in St. Paul on short notice for lobbying or attending meetings, you could make the difference in getting our legislation moving and passed. Can you be part of our team?

NOTE:  This summary contains the main items covered.  If you are a
Pre-69 member who needs more details, please contact any Coordinating
Committee member.

  1.  TRA election - ballots have been counted;  election results will
be posted on TRA's website after the next TRA Trustees' meeting on
April 20.

  2.  Legislative Commission on Pensions & Retirement  -  As of April
15, the LCPR has scheduled meetings for Wed., April 20, 8:00 AM to 9:00
AM;  Thurs. April 21, 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM, and Friday, April 22, 9:00 AM
to Noon.  No agendas have been announced yet.  You may check on Pension
Commission schedules & agendas at:
www.commissions.leg.state.mn.us/lcpr/lcprmain.htm

  3.  Lobbying strategy -  Our lobbying message remains simple:  All
members of the defined class of 1968-69 teachers had their irrevocable
pension choice changed by legislative action.  However, only some
members of the defined class of 1968-69 teachers were given two pension
choices at retirement, while the rest of the members were given only
one pension choice at retirement.

  4.  Possible LCPR results -  If the commission passes our legislation
we anticipate it would go to government operations committees in the
House & Senate.  If our bills are not approved we would hope to move
forward through other committees, as Sen. Larson did last year.  If the
commission moves to study our bills during the interim, we would
continue lobbying during the interim.

  5. Joe & John G. updated us on their successful effort to identify
potential members who had not been communicating with us - they had an
excellent response and our membership as of April 13 now stands at the
strongest membership and communication position we have enjoyed since
we started.  They also received many new donations to help with
communications' expenses.

  6. Joe O., Tom S., & Rick W. met with Sen. Larson & Rep. Beard and
together composed a letter to Senate & House authors of our legislation
to thank them and help clarify facts about our legislation and our
membership.

  7. Next meeting - The Coordinating Committee is scheduled to meet
Friday, April 29 in St. Paul.
