| 1. Be persistent. Our teachers who have senators and representatives who thoroughly understand the issue (and often support us) say that they have talked with their legislators as many as ten times. 2. Keep your letters short--no more than one page. Let the first letter be a hook for future meetings or correspondence. 3. Our issue is difficult to understand. You may need to explain it through several communications. 4. Legislators want to hear from their constituents. A Winona legislator will probably throw away a letter from a Warroad teacher. 5. A personal meeting with your legislators is more effective than any other form of communication. Can you meet with your legislator in your district and/or join us on lobbying days at the capitol? 6. If you are in a new district, we want you to contact your former legislators as well as your new ones. If each of us does this, it will help us contact all legislators. |
