Past Prayers of The Day
February 2003

Week of February 23, 2003

The human spirit is not dead.
It lives on in secret.
It has come to believe that compassion
in which all ethics take root,
can only attain breadth and depth
if it embraces all living creatures
and does not limit itself to mankind.

- Albert Schweitzer

The Father of compassion
and the God of all comfort,
comforts us in all our troubles,
so that we can comfort those in any trouble
with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

- 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Week of February 10, 2003

Bless Thee, O Lord,
for the living arc of the sky over me this morning.

Bless Thee, O Lord,
for the companionship of night mist
far above the skyscraper peaks I saw
when I woke once during the night.

Bless Thee, O Lord,
for the miracle of light to my eyes
and the mystery of it ever changing.

Bless Thee, O Lord,
for the laws Thou hast ordained holding fast
these tall oblongs of stone and steel,
holding fast the planet Earth in its course
and farther beyond the circle of the Sun.

- Carl Sandburg

Week of February 3, 2003

We have loved the stars too fondly
to be fearful of the night.

- In memory of Rick Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson,
David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon
