IN
THE GARDEN OF THE LORD
HELEN KELLER
The
word of the Lord came unto me,
Sitting alone among the multitudes;
And my blind eyes were touched with light,
And there was laid upon my lips a flame of fire.
I
laugh and shout for life is good,
Though my feet are set in silent ways.
In merry mood I leave the crowd,
To walk in my garden. Even as I walk
I gather fruits and flowers in my hands,
And with joyful heart I bless the sun
That kindles all the place with radiant life.
I run with playful winds that blow the scent
Of rose and jasmine in eddifying whirls.
At
last I come where tall lilies grow,
Lifting their faces like white saints to God.
While the lilies pray, I kneel upon the ground:
I have strayed into the holy temple of the Lord.

GOD
GIVE ME JOY
THOMAS CURTIS CLARK
God
give me joy in the common things:
In the dawn that lures, the eve that sings.
In
the new grass sparkling after rain,
In the late wind's wild and weird refrain;
In
the springtime's spacious field of gold,
In the precious light by winter doled.
God
give me joy in the love of friends,
In the dear home talk as summer ends;
In
the songs of children, unrestrained;
In the sober wisdom age has gained.
God
give me joy in the tasks that press,
In the memories that burn and bless;
In
the thought that life has love to spend,
In the faith that God's at journey's end.
God
give me the hope for each day that springs,
God give me the joy in common things!

I
SHALL BE GLAD
GRACE NOLL CROWELL
If
I can put new hope within the heart
Of one who has lost hope,
If I can help a brother up
Some difficult long slope
That seems too steep for tired feet to go,
If I can help him climb
Into the light upon the hill's far crest,
I shall begrudge no time
Or strength that I spend, for well I know
How great may be his need.
If I can help through any darkened hour,
I shall be glad indeed.
For
I recall how often I have been
Distressed, distraught, dismayed,
And hands have reached to help, and voices called
That kept me unafraid.
If I can share this help that I have had,
God knows I shall be glad.

THIS IS MY FATHER'S
WORLD
MALTIE D. BABCOCK
(See
HYMNS on Scripture Page)
This
is my Father's world,
And to my listening ears,
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world:
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought.
This
is my Father's world,
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
Declare their Maker's praise.
This is my Father's world:
He shines in all that's fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.
This
is my Father's world,
O! let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father's world:
The battle is not done;
Jesus who died shall be satisfied,
And earth and heaven be one.

I SHALL NOT
PASS
THIS WAY AGAIN
ANONYMOUS
Through
this toilsome world, alas!
Once and only once I pass;
If a kindness I may show,
If a good deed I may do
To a suffering fellow man,
Let me do it while I can.
No delay, for it is plain
I shall not pass this way again.

THE LARGER PRAYER
EDNA D. CHENEY
At
first I prayed for Light:
Could I but see the way,
How gladly, swiftly would I walk
To everlasting day!
And
next I prayed for Strength:
That I might tread the road
With firm, unfaltering feet, and win
The heaven's serene abode.
And
then I asked for Faith:
Could I but trust my God,
I'd live enfolded in His peace
Though foes were all abroad.
But
now I pray for Love:
Deep love to God and man,
A living love that will not fail,
However dark His plan.
And
Light and Strength and Faith
Are opening everywhere;
God only waited for me, till
I prayed the larger prayer.

GOD, ARE YOU
THERE?
HELEN STEINER RICE
I'm
way down HERE!
You're way up THERE!
Are You sure You can hear
My faint, faltering prayer?
For I'm so unsure
Of just how to pray—
To tell you the truth, God,
I don't know what to say...
I just know I am lonely
And vaguely disturbed,
Bewildered and restless,
Confused and perturbed...
And they tell me that prayer
Helps to quiet the mind
And to unburden the heart
For in stillness we find
A newborn assurance
That SOMEONE DOES CARE
And SOMEONE DOES ANSWER
Each small sincere prayer!
