Betty Boop first appeared on August 8th 1930, in a cartoon entitled "Dizzy Dishes", in which she was a canine cabaret singer. She was designed by animater Grim Natwick and went through many changes under his hand. Betty Boop started out her life as a dog, with droppy ears and a button nose. She was to be the love intrest of Bimbo, the dog. But soon the droppy ears transformed into earrings and sexy short skirts began to appear. Many other small changes took place eg. replacing the two garters on her legs with just one on the left etc.  transforming this sexy canine to the Betty Boop we know and love today.  Her body was modeled after Mae West's and her singing style taken from Helen Kane.A number of women took on the role of Betty's voice including Kate Wright, Bonnie Poe, Mae Questel, Margie Hines and Annabel Little.

By 1932 Betty was considered to be the first and only female animated screen star who could do it all - drama, musicals and comedy- and dont we know it!

But the transformation from dog to sexy star was not the only one Betty went through. In 1935 the Hays Act was passed. This act intended to "clean up" the media. Betty's above the knee skirts, sleeveless and sometimes see through dresses and large slits were replaced with longer skirts and dresses with collars and sleeves, portraying Betty as more of a "teacher like"character  than the sassy siren she used to be.
