My star (2000) My star Ain't it funny? My star (instrumental) Before the Eurovision Song Contest, BrainStorm only had fourteen days to shoot the video for 'My star' and send it to Stockholm, so the video was quick and simple. It is a simple video of the guys playing football and sitting on English grass. The video was shot in the Jacob's Studios, 30 kilometres from London, and directed by drummer Kaspars. Later 'My star' was re-recorded, produced by Tony Mansfield, the producer of A-Ha. Renars likes the new version, and thinks Tony is very optimistic, enthusiastic, kind and angelic, and has great ideas. According to Renars, he really really loves music, which is obviously very important. Its also the reason why BrainStorm love Tony. 'My star' is a very personal song, and Renars hoped the people in Stockholm, at the ESC, would feel it. At home on a day in February, when he was writing the Latvian lyrics, it was just like any other song. The music was created like the band's other music. The Latvian version, 'Issavienojums', is a strong and sad love song, while 'My star' is more about faith in something unique, one star in the whole sky, one love in the whole world. The English lyrics appeared to Renars in Cannes, France, at 5 o'clock in the morning after a party, when came out of a bar and went to the beach. The sun was rising, but there was just one star left in the sky, and he realised, wow, that's my star; it was different to the rest. First it was a funny song to the band, because of the many movie references like 'never say never', 'end of days' and 'runaway bride'. Renars wanted to make this song a parody about movies, but then changed his mind. The first time Tony heard the song it was sung in Latvian and it captured his imagination, even though he didnt understand what it was about. When he read the English lyrics he thought the song was really good. He says he's a mood person: lyrics are important, but the mood and spirit of the song are more important to him and he felt a great spirit in 'My star'. Cutting the track was an intense experience and the final version was made in a couple of days. Several hours before the production was completed, Tony felt good about the result; the band members were pleased with their instrumental contributions and he added the computer work. He reckoned the song was then the best mixture of both worlds. Renars loves the Latvian language, but reckoned words are important and was sure people would enjoy the song more if they understood what it is about, instead of hearing nice sound but incomprehensible Latvian. 'My star' was added as a bonus track to the re-release 'Among the Suns'. |

Vecas Pagastmajas Misterijas (2000) A film by eminent Latvian director Janis Streichs, in which Renars played the main character. It is available on video. |
BrainStorm usually make their albums in the Spring, because they find it a creative time.
They think finding the right producer for an album is very important nowadays, since the producer is like an extra member of the band, who decides about things like which sounds and which guitars are used.
