Accesibility
in India. Whats wrong?
What if disability strikes
U?
What if u were not able to walk, standup, use your hands, legs?
What if u are not able to see, talk or hear?
I was non-disabled person, I could walk, run, do all. I was ignorant about disability.
I didn't care & now I am disabled. I learned lot of disability
This article is only to create an awareness of disability &
Below are some of my thoughts on disability. I was a normal healthy guy &
at the age of 22, I was diagnosed by Muscular dystrophy one of rare incurable
disease. I still shy away with the fact that I am disabled. But still these
are my views.
- Political will:
Our politicians do not have the will to make life easier for disabled people.
Only a few politicians talk of disability, but they just talk. I personally
think that the health minister should be a disabled person & not a Doctor
or any other person. The reason, because only a disabled person knows, how
it feels to live life with disability.
- Jokes made in new
Bombay & all over: When u travel to most of the cities in our country
u see big holdings saying welcome to the 21st century city. But if u look
at the footpaths, they don't have ramps & not only that but they are so
high, almost a feet. Big enough, to make someone disabled in rush hours. If
we stop following the basics like these we end up criticizing the government
and authorities for their negligence. Like the Gujarat earthquake where people
criticized the government for not seeing buildings were earthquake resistant.
- Trains: In Mumbai
city have signs showing accessibility for disabled but it's a big big joke.
No way the trains are accessible for people in wheel chairs. India has a large
network of railway lines. If trains were accessible it would solve lot of
long distance traveling problems for the disabled.
- Schools: The
things we learn in school shape us up to make good human beings. 'dis'-ability
is constructed socially and culturally. If student are made aware with the
various facets of disability, it would help a lot.
- Foot paths & fibre
optic war : With digging of roads for laying of fiber optic cables by
big company's like power surfer, Hughes & reliance. There is a war going
on for these company's to lay cables by digging the footpaths. I think such
an opportunity should be seized by government demanding them to build footpaths
with ramps and are accessible to all.
