Independence -
Our Tryst with Destiny
India got independence from British Rule on 15th of August 1947. The date of
birth of new India is thus 15th August and the time taken and accepted by
majority of astrologers is 00:00 hrs. midnight.
India’s Natal Horoscope
Ascendant - Taurus with North Node (Rahu)
Gemini - Mars
Cancer - Moon, Mercury, Saturn (combust), Venus (combust), Sun
Libra - Jupiter
Scorpio - South Node (Ketu)
United Kingdom’s Natal Horoscope
This chart is based on the Act of Union assented by British royalty which
became effective on 1st January 1801. The time is midnight 00 hrs. and the
place is Westminster (0W07’00”; 51N30’00”). The planetary details are as
follows:
Ascendant - Virgo with South Node (Ketu)
Scorpio - Mercury
Sagittarius - Sun
Capricorn - Venus
Pisces - North Node (Rahu)
Aries - Mars
Gemini - Moon
Cancer - Jupiter (Retrograde)
Leo - Saturn (Retrograde)
The Bondage Factor
If you contemplate over the planetary combinations and especially on the
Sun-Saturn conjunction, then one thing is very clear and that is the severe
relationship between the parent and the tormented child! In India’s case the
fatherhood goes to Britishers who are represented by combust Saturn and Sun
represents the child. Combust Saturn in enemy sign shows enmity between the
two. With conjunction to Sun, the fierce enemy, it was a long battle between
the two. The reason is represented by Cancer that represents “mother” or to
be specific “motherland”. Venus, the self is also under severe affliction
from Sun in combust position signifying the state of affairs. Another way to
look at it is, North Node, the foreign planet occupies the ascendant
creating the Kala-Sarpa yoga which further indicates bondage. Since it is a
watery sign it shows emotional bondage for the same. Saturn is significator
of karma and karma results in natural zodiac therefore it was result of past
karma for India.
Why Independence?
From India’s Chart
But how independence came when so many factors indicated bondage? The
planet, which rules foreigners, is Mars, which is weak by its position in
Gemini and in the eighth house from Scorpio. Though it is powerful being the
lord of twelfth house posited in third house from there but is in twelfth
house from its dispositor. It is hemmed between malefics and thus involved
in Papakartari yoga. It has the aspect of the Eighth house lord Jupiter
which is also weak. Please note that Jupiter is lord of twelfth house from
twelfth house thus will become severely malefic. Saturn has debilitated
aspect on the twelfth house.
Despite the above astrological logics some astrologers may opine that if
both Saturn and Mars has powerful aspects on the tenth house then how this
is possible? The simple reason is that the said house has equally powerful
malefic aspects. Even if you take Aries as ascendant for the twelfth house
then also you find Saturn being combust with Sunrays. Sun being the lord of
fifth house from Aries, the ruling foreign power was also experiencing the
results of its past karma since Sun the fifth lord from Aries ascendant has
severe malefic aspect on the power/throne house. Sun posited in twelfth from
its sign also shows pressure from losses.
From UK’s Chart
It is not only the transit but also the major periods that signify loss of
power in a major way.
Mars was transiting through Gemini in Eighth house from Scorpio, the house
of power
Jupiter the lord of seventh house of partners was transiting to the Eighth
house in Libra
Rahu was transiting through Taurus - just opposite from Pisces, its natal
position. Ketu also was in equally bad state in Scorpio with Mercurial
effects
Now, see the twelfth house from twelfth i.e. Cancer wherein all the
functional benefic planets are in bad shape.
Saturn is in twelfth from its natal position and Sun is again Eighth
It was Me-Me-Ra-Mo period on 15 August 1947 - Here we should note that both
from Sun and Moon - Mercury is in inimical position. Even from ascendant it
is not very comfortable in the house of power under severe malefic aspect
from Mars, Jupiter & Rahu. Please note the six-eighth relationship of Moon &
Mercury, which caused loss, and with Rahu’s involvement the foreign element
became stronger posited in Ninth house. It was Rahu & Mars involvement that
misdirected the communicative Mercury and since it was posited in Cancer in
transit and Scorpio in natal chart with severe malefic influence. It was a
traumatic end with lot of bloodshed and division of the ruling country.
While Rahu represents Muslims; Mars represents Kshatriyas.
The Cost of Independence
Another point Now if India was supposed to be independent then why so much
bloodshed and why partition? The afflicted Moon in third house being a
watery sign with four other planets without benefic aspects was creating
grave power struggle. If we look at the fourth house of motherland then its
lord is in twelfth house from there indicates loss to motherland. North Node
in ascendant that rules foreign elements also indicates trouble since
ascendant lord is under severe affliction in the enemy house and combust.
The tenth house lord which rules over masses is also under severe affliction
and is combust. The power struggle was so strong amongst the top leaders
that it only resulted in bloodshed and hatred and fight over the land. Since
the ascendant, fifth and ninth lords are involved in this power struggle and
involvement of all three houses representing religion it would have been a
literally tormenting time for people at large.
The Positive Picture
The above is a astrological portrait of the independence scenario. With this
we need to see the positive things in the chart of India.
For many astrologers, India’s chart is a unique example of Kala-Sarpa yoga
and research subject. While North Node in Ascendant is very strong and
equivalent to Venus in own sign. South Node is equally powerful and
equivalent to powerful Mars in own house.
North Node represents material prosperity in the practical earthy sign
Taurus. South Node represents occult fervor of the nation in the mystical
watery sign Scorpio.
Mars is though in a neutral sign Gemini but with benign aspect of Jupiter,
the natural benefic helped India in becoming financially strong.
The presence of five planets & all the functional benefic planets in the
third house signifies the power aspect quite strongly. Jupiter being the
lord of 8th house placed in the sixth house not only promises longevity but
also competitive edge over enemies over a long period of time.
End Note
How easily we lost the value of independence that was achieved with bloody
freedom struggle of decades losing thousands of human lives.
Now, are we still trying to justify the value of freedom? Since we are
minute power centres within ourselves that contribute to major power centres.
With the shining glory of gold the luster of Indian freedom has lost its
charm to many people who are still living in the vast borders of India yet
awaiting for the glorious era of “Rama Rajya”.
