"New Age Yoga May Be In Offing For Israeli Prisoners"

Jerusalem, Press Trust of India: Yoga, meditation and breathing exercises may soon become part of the daily routine of hardened criminals and extremists in Israel's high-security jails if the violence-torn Jewish state implements prison programmes designed by Indian spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who is here with a message of love and peace.

At their meetings with the high-profile Indian New Age guru earlier this week, Israeli leaders—including President Moshe Katsav, former prime minister Shimon Peres and minister for Jerusalem and Diaspora Affairs Natan Sharansky—evinced keen interest in the activities and programmes of Shankar's Art of Living Foundation, including prison reforms.

Only through a change of heart acan peace be brought about and not through force, the Bangalore-based spiritual master, who commands a worldwide following, told the Israeli leaders. He told Mr. Katsav that the foundation has been helping provide post-traumatic rehabilitation programmes and prison programmes in various parts of the world.

Mr. Katsav told the guru that Israel was facing a situation of war, bloodshed and terrorism since its independence and "the last three years have been the most difficult in our history."

The guru told the president that tthe only solution was to bring about a change of mind and heart as external forces alone would not be effective in combating terrorism.

Mr. Katsav was critical of the international media for "failing" to distinguish between terrorism and acts to prevent it.

He also said that the media was committing the "mistake" of holding "the weak as innocent and the strong as guilty."
