Dalit girl thrown into well for temple visit

A minor dalit girl was thrown into a well by residents of Parwasa village for worshipping in a temple.

Police said Laxmi went to offer prayers in a Parwasa village temple where she had a dispute with Kailash, Preetam and Shankar, who threw her into a nearby well.

The girl was admitted to a local hospital where her condition is stated to be serious.

Suprintendent of Police, Vedprakash Sharma said senior police officers were investigating the case. ''A case under section 307 of Indian Penal Code and (Prevention of Atrocities against ) Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes Act has been filed against the accused,'' but no arrest have been made so far, he said.

Hinduism considers that the 'low castes' or Dalits ('the Broken Ones') are Hindus but refuses them permission to participate in Hindu worship or religious learning at the pain of great punishment. There is a movement among Hindu Dalits for reform and for gaining the right to temple entry.
