Vapor deposition ice on yellow coneflower seed heads, Nov.2000, McMahon Road, Near Eyota, MN, USA
Prairie Ice
Yellow Prairie Coneflower seed heads and stalks with ice crystals growing by vapor deposition in a supersaturated gas flow (well, anyway, it was cold, relatively high-humidity, and a light and constant breeze), just like growing silicon crystals for computers............. Or...... maybe these crystals are just supposed to look like butterflies.....
