My Cats Don't Shed (I Do)
Answers to frequently - and infreqently - asked questions about Devons, showing, breeding and life with cats.
We Don't Feed Raw

Some breeders feed raw foods exclusively and will only sell to people who continue this practice, or promise to. Honestly, I have not researched the pros and cons of a raw food diet for cats because of this:

I have children.

The kids feed our cats.

Raw meat requires very careful handling and cleaning.

I do not trust my kids to be completely safe with raw meat, therefore I won't use it.

My mentor fed raw...briefly. Her kids were seemingly fine, didn't get the runs or anything, but she did have a litter of baby kittens drop dead and the necropsies showed salmonella poisoning from feeding raw meat in her cattery.

So you'll find no raw food here, although there are many breeders who swear by
it. Many swear against it after trying it.

I do believe that there are enough good prepared foods out there that I can feed my cats well. I do not trust the health of my cats to just one company, though. There are too many theories and "ideal formulas" out there. They always get a mix of at least two different
brands, plus vitamins, hopefully covering the bases. Wet is better than dry, but I use both. Dry is simply more convenient.

I am NOT happy with the Royal Canin company these days. They almost killed two of the pets I've placed -- in two different homes -- with a bad batch they didn't propperly recall. I really don't want to go there anymore, but I'm torn because Baby Cat is so good for our weaning kittens. I'm also ticked at Iams for adding fish oil to their foods; two of my cats started puking when they got the new formula and we've had to switch away from Iams.

We have three kids, upto six cats, two dogs and two full-time jobs outside of the home, so I don't have guilt about using prepared foods or dry food, for that matter.

We know our cats are healthy. We have the vet certificates, ribbons and referrals of our pet buyers to prove it.

I trust the pet owners we select for our kittens to choose what is best for their cats and families. Otherwise, they would be turned away. Whatever they choose to feed their kittens -- with our recommendations in mind -- I hope they do so without guilt. :-)
