HOSE DRILLS
AIM
To revise basic hose laying and
rolling techniques and increase members proficiency in these skills.
At the end of the training
session, members will be able to:
a) Demonstrate
bowling out and laying hose.
b) Demonstrate footballing flaking or figure 8 and flat
rolling hose.
c) Demonstrate
working as a team member to lay hose and deliver water through a single line of
2 lengths of different diameter hose.
d) Demonstrate
replacing a broken hose in a line comprising of at least 2 lengths of hose.
e) Demonstrate
working as a team member to lay hose and deliver water through a line of hose,
breached from 64mm to 2 x 38mm.
f)
Demonstrate the use of hand signals.
At the end of the training session
crew
leaders will have demonstrated:
a) Allocating
roles to all crew participating in the activity (eg truck length, branch
length, etc).
b) The use of
hand signals.
c) Clearly
instructing members in how they are to replace a burst length of hose.
d) Sound
leadership skills including assisting in the role out and pack up of equipment
when the crew leader is not required to undertake any other duties (ie not just
standing and instructing the crew).
Prior to
the conduct of the practical component of the exercise, members will have the
principle of allocating work to a team laying hose explained to them. The crew
leader should go over the various positions (such as “branch length”) with the
crew.
Hand
signals will also be explained and demonstrated to the members. Members should
practice the hand signals prior to the practical exercise commencing.
The crew
leader will allocate tasks to the crew as at the commencement of each drill.
Members should be rotated through all of the various tasks over the duration of
the drills.
All
communication during the drills should be by hand signals.
To ensure
that the activity works well as a development tool for crew leaders, a
“controller” should advise the crew leader of the drill directly prior to its
conduct, thus requiring the crew leader to plan and allocate duties on the run.
·
Water will be delivered from a line of 2 lengths (each of
different diameter) within a period of 90 seconds from the commencement of the
exercise.
·
A length of hose will be replaced in a line of 2 lengths and
water delivered within 60 seconds of the order to replace the length being
given.
·
Water will be delivered through 2 x 38mm branches, which
have been breaches from a single length of 65mm hose within 100 seconds of the
order to lay the hose being given.
·
All water on, water off, pack up and other related orders
will be given by hand signals during the exercise.
