It was difficult to know how to approach this album; I've been familiar with the BitB's tunes since '76, I bought "UC" when it came out and even had a crack at using the samples to create something myself so it was hard not to listen to "Knots" without thinking, "Oh yeah, there's the drum riff from "River"," or "I can hear the sitar from "Interview" in there somewhere........". But the object of the exercise was not to remix GG but to create NEW music so I stuck the CD on repeat for half a day, went about my simple tasks and tried to forget where the source material came from. That did the trick! This is wonderful electronic music, occasionally verging on what we in the UK would call "dance". There are thirteen different artists present although you'd hardly know it.....The rhythms blend seamlessly. (Hands up those who used Acid software). There are a couple of tracks which don't quite work for me because the artists in question are obviously too familiar with GG's music to distance themselves but the majority of the album shows sparkling wit and originality, the best tunes coming from artists who, quite possibly, have NEVER heard GG in all their glory! I would recommend that you at least try to grab a listen. I talked to Steve for a few minutes before the show, a very nice guy BTW, and asked him why there were only a few West Coast shows on this tour. Speaking of the Dregs, I just replaced my old CD copy of "What If" with the new remastered version. Amazing amazing amazing sound!!! Gotta love that Ken Scott production job. The drums just pop. Come to think of it, Ken Scott does an amazing job with capturing sound on LEVEL 42's "True Colours" CD. As I speak of Level 42...Last night I was in an *adult contemporary* mood(it doesn't happen often ;) Anyway, while my wife was sleeping, I dipped into her CD collection(no jokes please...dirty dirty dirty). It was all there...Toto, Sade, Pm Dawn, Inner City, Soul II Soul, Tears For Fears, etc.(I was an overnight DJ at my local *adult contemporary* radio station from '92 to '94) While many of you dig Toto quite a bit, I must agree you're all right on the button with this band. This is just some great *pop* music which sounds impressive. If you like Toto, you owe it to yourself to buy at least 1 Level 42 CD. Level 42 was on deck last night as well. I recommend these: LEVEL 42 - "True Colours"(Fusion pop & Heavy Metal all at once) LEVEL 42 - "World Machine"(contains the hit "Something About You") LEVEL 42 - "Running In The Family" LEVEL 42 - "Guaranteed"(Alan Holdsworth on guitar) or LEVEL 42 - "Best"(for housewives and little girls) ;) These guys can turn the cheesiest pop tunes into a fusion wet dream. If you don't believe me, check out the album/CD "True Colours". The vocals are great too, along with the Ken Scott production job. Some of Level 42's stuff can definitely be considered *Prog* as well. One must remember that Bark Psychosis was heavily influenced by early Level 42(especially the "True Colours" album) Mumbling... Here's why I bought TPatG first: I had no idea what to expect from GG so I went to a store where they allow you to listen to any CD there. I think they had the first three albums, TPatG, MP and GFaD. I didn't want to start with one of the earlier albums because I figured they must have improved as they went, nor did I want any of the last albums because I had heard they went to pop. That left TPatG as the only choice from the store's selection. It looked like it had come out during a good era in progressive music, plus it was my birthyear (now that was the deciding factor). I brought it to the listening station and listened to the first minute or two of each track. I was impressed! The tracks that caught my attention on the first listen were Aspirations and No God's a Man (I smiled when I was pelted with the barage of vocals in that one). So that's the story. Little did I know that my friend at work had ordered Free Hand a few days before I made my purchase. It wasn't long before I went and bought AtT (I chose this one because I went to a store that didn't have much besides it). I couldn't believe that a second album could be so good! Plus I love the blurb in the liner notes- to me that is the definition of great music.
