People for a Peaceable Planet
Pressuring ourselves
by Bob Hicks, PPP
I worry that as we are faced by the immensity of the war and our resulting despondency
from our country's attack, we are pressuring ourselves to find an answer. This
pressure doubled when our numbers dropped following the start of the war. I
worry that all this pressure is unhealthy for us as a group.
We knew we were not going to prevent a war. It also makes sense that people
would draw back from peace events once troops were deployed. So, we should not
feel these occurrences are failings. Instead, I suggest we continue with our
vigils and meetings -- stand firm. New ideas and new approaches will fall into
place as long as we seek them but don't force them.
We live in a little, rural conservative county. Our steadiness in vigils and
repeatedly well-attended events demonstrate that the message of peace compels
people everywhere -- even in downtown Mount Vernon and Burlington strip malls.
PPP is a success, even in the misery of war. Let's stay in this for the long
run and keep doing good work.

Bob Hicks
