10 Reasons To Oppose War Against Iraq

By Chris Pforr

1. Because it will violate international law, and undermine the authority and legitimacy of the United Nations.

2. Because it will reinforce the idea that violence and war are better solutions to international disagreements than diplomacy and negotiation.

3. Because the main victims will be countless thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians.

4. Because it will further militarize warring countries, especially the United States, and reinforce in world consciousness the fear that the US will economically and militarily crush any opposition to it's pursuits.

5. Because it will enrich and empower the US military-industrial-petroleum complex, and entrench the role of the US government to serve corporate geopolitical interests.

6. Because it will exacerbate the international arms race, increasing the likelihood that more nations will try to acquire weapons of mass destruction, in desperate attempts to protect themselves against the "bull in the china shop."

7. Because it will reinforce the dangerous beliefs that:
· Our expensive addiction to huge imports of petroleum is acceptable;
· We have the right to control the oil resources of the Middle East;
· It's OK to go to war for oil.

8. Because it will unleash new anger against the United States in the Middle East, exacerbating tensions and conditions that create fundamentalism and terrorism.

9. Because it will create thousands of new terrorists, who will hatch plots to create disasters even more horrible than those of September 11, 2001.

10. Because the resulting increase in terrorism will serve to justify expansion of the US "War on Terrorism", which is really a war to redistribute wealth upwards, restrict civil liberties, and expand US dominance in the world.
