The First Luminous Mystery: Baptism of Jesus - Openness to the Holy Spirit

The Hail Mary - 6

Jesus, understanding the mind of John the Baptist, says in reply, "Allow it for now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." (Mth 3: 15) Christ was acting in obedience to the Will of the Father. For Christ was sinless and had no need of cleansing waters to remove the defilment of sin. Rather he humbled himself, allowing himself to be baptized because it was in the designs of God that he be identified with sinners.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee;

Blessed are thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus
who gives us new life.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.
