Overall
The Nevis Road Improvement and Maintenance Project (RIMP) is one of the latest Infrastructural undertakings of the Nevis Island Administration. It involves the complete reconstruction of the Island's Main Road between Newcastle and Market Shop via Charlestown. It is a total of approximately 16.4 km in length. The project was divided into two phases with Phase 1 being from Newcastle to Cotton Ground, and Phase 2 being from Cotton Ground to Market Shop.
Phase 1
Phase 1 of the RIMP was done by the firm of Professional Technologies (Anguilla), Ltd. (PROTECH), with offices in St. Kitts. The 10 month contract amount was for EC$10.4 million, plus EC$3.5 million as contingencies for the construction of some village roads in Bath Village. Work started in January 2001 and was to be completed by October 2001. However, because of variations agreed to on site, the works was completed in March 2002.
There are two areas where major re-alignment took place; Cades Bay and Oualie. These realignments were necessary in order to take out some of the more dangerous curves and make the roads safer. Other improvements include the marking of the centerline and edge lines creating driving lanes, and the erection of appropriate road signs.
Phase 2
Phase 2 of the RIMP was undertaken by the British company of Lagan Holdings, Ltd. This contract was for EC$24.6 million with a duration of 58 calendar weeks. The works started in July 2001 and was scheduled for completion in August 2002. The works was indeed substantially completed by August 2002. Phase 2, like Phase 1, saw some realignments, though not to the scale as those of Phase 1, and there is also the presence of the centerline and edge lines along with the road signs. The contract was completed within the contract sum.
