INTRINSIC VALUES: Socio-Cultural

The bogs area was almost certainly an Amerindian site, due to the presence of fresh water.
From the 1600�s, the mineral springs were used for bathing and �taking the cure� by local residents and European visitors.
* The springs were first mentioned by Captain John Smith in 1607, as he traveled to North America to settle England�s first colony, Jamestown, Virginia.
