YOUTH FOOTBALL St. Petersburg Times; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Jul 22, 2001; STEVE LEE; Sub Title: [STATE Edition] Abstract: Hopefully, sunny days lie ahead for the Shady Hills Raiders, who get a second chance at hosting the Pasco Police Athletic League Jamboree after last year's rainout. [Anne Lenney] said Shady Hills had planned to spend the money earned from hosting last year's jamboree on a $2,500 blocking sled and equipment for a record turnout of 200 youth football players and cheerleaders. With this year's addition of the Wesley Chapel Vipers and New Tampa Wildcats, the jamboree will rotate on a 12-year schedule to accommodate the league's 12 programs. Full Text: The annual jamboree will be held Aug. 11 at 8 a.m. at River Ridge's Jim Valentine Athletic Complex, the site of last year's canceled opening day ceremonies and exhibition games. "I'm just going to say a prayer that the good Lord gives us a day of sunshine," Shady Hills director Anne Lenney said. "I just hope the weather holds up, that's all I can say." Lenney said Shady Hills had planned to spend the money earned from hosting last year's jamboree on a $2,500 blocking sled and equipment for a record turnout of 200 youth football players and cheerleaders. But she had to do some politicking at last month's board meeting to get the league to unanimously approve Shady Hills as host for this year's jamboree. "I had to get up there and plead my case," Lenney said of the meeting. "(PPAL directors) were all very supportive. They understood my point." With this year's addition of the Wesley Chapel Vipers and New Tampa Wildcats, the jamboree will rotate on a 12-year schedule to accommodate the league's 12 programs. PPAL teams at four levels - flyweights, mighty mites, junior varsity and varsity - began conditioning July 16 and start contact drills Monday. "The fun stuff begins on Monday. We're fired up, baby," New Port Richey flyweights coach Donnie Britt said. Wesley Chapel director Dave Libby is just as eager for the season to start, especially to see the first-year Vipers take the field. "All four teams are pretty much full," Libby said. "Even our flag football program (PPAL instituted that level last season and five communities participated) is up and running. The only thing we're a little short in is cheerleading." Girls ages 5 to 15 interested in cheerleading for Wesley Chapel should contact Vipers cheerleading coordinator Margaret Gibson at (813) 948-1265.
