A Favorite Subject
My first published article was about why I draw my son when he's asleep. I've been drawing him since he was a baby, and still did from time to time, till around fourteen ("Hey! That's an invasion of privacy!"). There's something about a child sleeping that just asks to be drawn. Other favorite candidates (victims?) are people on buses and trains. They awaken, and hurry off at their stops, most never knowing that they've been documented. Some of them, though, seem to have a sixth sense, and will throw me a suspicious glance. At this point I put my sketchbook in my lap, and close my eyes: "Who, me? Draw YOU? Never." Here's another drawing of my son when he was young.

Here's one, below, done when he was thirteen. Miraculously, he didn't get mad at my putting it up here. (Who knows how he'd feel now, though, at sixteen, if I were to draw him sleeping?--Will I risk finding out?
Stay tuned...)

Here's a young man on a bus, who never knew he ended up in my book. |
Here's one I did of my friend Maureen, when I visited her. She's not only still talking to me, but didn't mind my putting her on my page! (That's one of her funny dogs, Max, guarding her.)

Well, here he is again--Jared, that is--with his permission, at 16.
