Arkansas Powwows Reviewed
Eureka Springs, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, June
It rained a lot this year, but there were quite a few dancers. Next year the committee is trying to build an awning of some type in case it rains. Squabbles have sometimes arisen when rules had to be changed to accommodate the weather. There was a Kiowa drum and two Pawnee drums. The dance is about ten miles south of town in a wildlife refuge with exotic animals. The animals are right next to the pow-wow rounds. There are a lot of vendors surrounding the arena. The committee treats the head staff very well. This was a three day event and camping is available. Most people stay in motels nowadays. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children. The city of Eureka Springs is gorgeous, but intended mostly for an adult crowd due to the number of massage parlors and alternative shops. Many Cherokees attend this event.
