Third Quarter Class Activities
Week of 3/24
3/24: Began Position Paper Unit. Read "What Can a Flawed Test Tell Us, Anyway?" and "Jay Gatsby Is a Man for Our Times" looking for position paper ideas, form ideas and techniques.
Week of 3/17
3/21: Read "1969", "Facing It" and "'You and I Are Disappearing.'" Discussed the uses of metaphor and wrote a description or poem using metaphor.
3/19: Proofread personal essays in groups of three.
3/18: Continued revising personal essays using linear revision activities. Looked at sentences, Latinate and Anglo Saxon word sources, more vivid word choice and titles.
3/17: Continued revising personal essays using lateral and linear revision activities including changing the form and/or audience, working from big to little starting with looking at Beginning/Middle/End and paragraphs.
Week of 3/10
314: Revised personal essays using lateral revision activities.
3/12: Write a change of perspective essay using the form and techniques from "A Change in Perspective."
3/10: Returned journals. Reviewed the characteristics of a successful conference. Shared personal essay with a partner.
Week of 3/3
3/7: Read "Fish," and "Poem," by Elizabeth Bishop, and excerpts from A Box of Matches by Nicholson Baker. Looked at the sensory details in each poem. Wrote a detailed, vivid description.
3/4: Read "Super Homeowner" and "Disco Divas." Looked at the Personal Essay Rubric.
3/3: Reviewed goals for range and clarity. Shared most important lines from "That Crucial First Draft."
Week of 2/24
2/27: Read "The Harrier Rituals" and the excerpt beginning with "The best part..." Wrote a personal essay based on a detailed description of a ritual.
2/26: Read litanies, discussed the characteristics of a litany and wrote one.
2/25: Read "The Crane" Began or continued a personal essay draft.
2/24: Returned Writing Samples. Reviewed Skills and Techniques. Read "Focusing on Friends" and looked for reusable ideas, form ideas or techniques. Began a draft using these ideas.
Week of 2/19
2/21: Discussed personal essay assignment. Read "Losing Advantages" and "Focusing on Friends". Looked for essay ideas, form ideas and techniques.
2/20: Collected writing samples. Read "My Physics Teacher", "This is Just to Say" and "To My Trigonometry Teacher". Collected poem ideas, form ideas and techniques. Wrote a poem.
Week of 2/10
2/11: Overview of the course.
2/12: Shared the qualities of good writing. Discussed the writing rubric and writing process. Made a list of personal essay topics.
2/13: Read "The Crane" and looked for essay ideas, form ideas and techniques. Shared the details from the list of ten and choice a topic for an essay.
2/14: Worked on the writing sample.
