Dreaming of You

By: Nicole

Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up late and think of you and I wish on a star
That somewhere you are thinking of me too

Dana was trying to sleep, but remembering the day that she lost the most important person to her and it was the day she was going to tell him something, something so important. She was dreaming of the day she lost him.

(Dream)

Carter and Dana were curled up on the couch enjoying sometime together before going out to work. “Carter, I’ve got something to tell you,” she started. Carter pulled back and looked at her.

“What is it?” He asked.

Dana opened her mouth to respond when Carter’s beeper went off. He quickly looked at it before looking at Dana. “Sorry, Day, I’ll talk to you later,” he told her. He gave her a kissed and smiled at her. “I love you,” he told her.

“I love you too,” she answered.

Once Carter left, Dana knew that it was time for her to get to work. So she got changed and left.

Dana was checking over a patient when the alarms went off. She took off down the hall and saw a gurney get rolled and her eyes widened in horror when she saw that it was Carter. “Carter! What happened?” She asked.

“He was rescuing a child when the roof fell,” a fireman replied.

Dana quickly got him into the room and had them get his burn clothes off. “His blood pressure’s dropping,” a nurse informed. Dana was desperately trying to keep Carter alive.

“Carter Grayson, don’t you dare leave me now,” she whispered.

“He’s gone into cardiac arrest,” the nurse informed.

“NO!” Dana shouted.

She couldn’t get Carter back. He was gone. Tears welled up in her eyes as she held onto Carter’s hand and removed the wedding ring on his finger. Then a sheet went over Carter’s face. He was gone and nothing could bring him back.

(End Dream)

'Cause I'm dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming about you and me

Wonder if you ever see me and I wonder if you
Know I'm there (Am I there)
If you looked in my eyes would you see what's inside
Would you even care

Dana shot up from bed with tears falling down her face. “Carter,” she whispered. She looked to her nightstand pulled the drawer open to find Carter’s wedding ring sitting in a box. Tears fell down her face as she took the ring into her hand and started tracing it as if she were trying to remember keep every last memory close to her. “Why did you have to leave me? Why did you have to go?” She whispered.

(Two Weeks Later)

Dana was walking around the hospital trying to get her work done when she saw the room that Carter died in. Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked at the woman behind the counter. “Morgan, I’m taking a break,” she informed. Morgan nodded and Dana went into the lounge.

Once Dana knew she was alone, she buried her face into her hands and cried. Carter was truly gone and there was nothing she could do about it.

I just wanna hold you close but so far
All I have are dreams of you
So I wait for the day and the courage to say
How much I love you

I'll dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming about you and me

Dana was asleep in that big bed with Carter’s pillow clutched to her chest. Suddenly she felt wind blow by. She looked around and her eyes widened in disbelief at who was standing there. “Carter?” She asked. Carter Grayson was standing in the room. She got out of bed and walked over to him. “What are you doing here?” She asked.

“I can’t stay long, Day. I came to tell you something. To tell you that I love you and I’ll always be with you,” he replied.

Dana was able to touch him. She was able to touch her beloved husband one last time. “Carter, I’ve got something to show you,” she told him. She then led him out of the room.

Ahh-Ahh
I can't stop dreaming of you
I can't stop dreaming
I can't stop dreaming of you

Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I still can't believe that
You came up to me and said
I love you
I love you too

Dana led him into a room that was painted blue and she quickly ran to a crib and pulled a bundle out. “The day you died, Carter, I was going to tell you I was pregnant,” she informed. Carter’s eyes widened as he looked at the baby in her arms. “His name is Carter, I named him after you,” she told him. Carter touched the baby’s face in disbelief.

“I have a son,” he murmured.

She nodded and tears fell down her face. “He’s strong, Carter, just like you,” she added. Carter smiled as he placed a kiss on the sleeping infant’s forehead.

“I’ll always be with you two,” he assured them.

He then placed a hand on her face and placed a kiss on her lips as he started to disappear. “I love you, Day,” he whispered as he disappeared.

“I love you too, Carter,” she answered.

When she opened her eyes, Carter was gone. She let out a sob and held her son to her as she cried softly. Dana was going to make sure that her son knew who his father was and what his father did for the world.

I'll be dreaming with you tonight
'Til tomorrow and for all of my life
And there's nowhere in the world l'd rather be
Than here in my room dreaming with you endlessly

(CHORUS OUT)
