The nights are foggy and eerie, you begin to sweat and breathe violently. As you walk across the stale footpath, into the creepy and disturbing forest which lurks ahead. Waiting for you to cross the murky and punishing threshold are creatures not of this world, nor of any other world. Creatures so Inhuman that the thought of it scares you out of your whits. This is because you areALONE IN THE DARK.
Alone in the Dark 4 is a very well put together descendant of one of the most well known horror games of the 20th Century. Sure, the first 3 games in the series were not as disturbing or gripping as the latest addition, but they were remembered by many as one of the most well put together horror games of all time.
As times change the theme of the story stays the same. You are yet again for the fourth time ..Alone in the Dark. Imagine yourself in a nightmare so bad that you wake up in a cold sweat, wondering if what you conjured up in your mind was real. But imagine not waking up from a suicide provoking nightmare, where darkness and evil is forever among you. Where the shadows lurk around every corner trying to grasp and strangle every piece of life until there is life no more. These things all correspond to Alone in the Dark 4.
If at the start of the game you choose the option of being the Male character, you begin in an evil and dark forest, with only your trusty flashlight to guide you along your way. If you on the other hand choose the female character, you start your quest for freedom in the haunted and disturbing house, where many strange and mind poisoning things have happened. Either route you choose to take, leads you to utter horror and terror as the game progresses.
The game has an eerie and terrifying theme to it throughout your experience as a prisoner of your own fear. Around every corner there is something to frighten you. Alone in the Dark 4, achieves being so wittingly terrifying by the music that is contained in it. As you get nearer and nearer to danger, the music picks up its pace, and leads you into a false sense of security, and you find yourself wanting to stop playing and hide the game somewhere forever. But you cant, because your hooked on the adrenaline that the game supplies.
The game, as many other horror games have, has the puzzle feature inside it, as you try to find a route away from evil, you are trapped behind an obstacle course of brain teasing puzzles which render impossible to solve. The weapons that the game offers to you and your character are not too bad or harmless. Although throughout the game, you may find yourself in a struggle for ammo, as this is the worst thing that could happen when in a situation of this kind.
Overall I rate Alone in the Dark 4 for the PS2 a huge and whopping 9/10 for its eccentric gameplay, smooth graphics and gripping and terrifying storyline. I urge all of you horror film fanatics or you wimps who need toughening up, to go our and purchase this fine example of what a horror game should be.
As it will be an experience you will never forget.
