Is Spider-Man Worth It?
|
Movies based on comic books have always suffered a very poor translation. Either because of sad story lines or shoody effects, they've been pretty extremely dissipointing on the whole.
But after the arrival of X-Men during the summer of '00, fans and Hollywood started seeing that yes, comic books can be made into good movies.
And now Spider-Man sets the standard that all movies adapted from a comic book should follow. Director Sam Raimi brings to life the story of Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), a young man who find himself with great power and great responsiblity.
Along with Spider-Man/Peter Parker, we have Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) as Peter's hot love intrest and next-door neighbor.
The Green Goblin (William Defoe) is the villian that makes his first appearnce with Spder-man, and as a phsyco lunitic out for revenge, Defoe does an superb job.
And even though I was shocked with the choice of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker instead of myself, I was very happy with his performance. He pulls off the "geek that got picked on all the time" role very well.
The story follows the origin of Spider-Man pretty closely. There are some changes to that story though. Such as one change, the spider that bites Peter is genticly engineered, instead of being exposed to radioactivity. A change that seems to reflect the fears of today's society.
The effects are amazing. Watching the CGI Spidey swinging through New York will leave you with your draw hanging open in awe. The Spider-Man and Green Goblin costumes are very cool. I was even tempted to start running around in my tights and fight crime, but I don't have the cool effects to help not look like a fool.
Also if you've got a keen eye, keep a look out for some of the cameo stars that appear through out this movie. Lucy lawless as a punk rocker, Bruce Campbell as the arena anouncer, Randy Savage as the wrestler (duh).
And even some Spider-Man characters that are future villinas of Spidey's make appearences. Such as Eddie Brock (Richard C. Everbeck), who long time Spidey fans know becomes the creepy bad guy Venom.
Put simply, this movie kicks ass. There's no doubt about it, this movie will only be topped by the sequel.

Hands On ~ Medal Of Honor: Frontline
|
We take a closer look at the early levels of EA's World War II-themed shooter.
Following about half a year after the release of the critically acclaimed PC Medal of Honor game, Allied Assault, Medal of Honor Frontline tells yet another tale of World War II heroism. The game puts you in the role of Lt. Jimmy Patterson, the lead character from the original MOH game, which was released on the PlayStation back in 1999.
The game starts off on a hectic note by placing you in the middle of the D-Day invasion at Normandy. This level is an awful lot like the Omaha Beach level found in Allied Assault, but it comes with slightly different objectives. After being blown out of your boat, you'll have to make your way to shore, rendezvous with your squad leader, and provide covering fire for advancing troops. From there, you have to clear out some machine gun nests and mark some gun towers with smoke grenades to signal for an aerial assault. Along the way, you'll man machine guns, make your way through a minefield, and mow down a ton of German soldiers. Once the invasion has taken place, you'll settle into more traditional objectives, like stowing away on a German U-boat to steal a codebook and plant explosives throughout the sub.
The game controls like a standard first-person shooter. You use the left analog stick to strafe and the right stick to turn and look. The top triggers are used for aiming, firing, and crouching. The Dual Shock 2's face buttons are used for weapon switching, jumping, and other context-specific actions, such as opening doors, planting explosives, and so on. All in all, the control works quite well.
The graphics and sound in Frontline are extremely impressive. Even when storming the beach in the game's opening level, the frame rate remains smooth, textures look sharp, and models animate well. The moment you enter the first machine gun tower and see German soldiers manning guns and trying to shoot down the planes that are buzzing their tower is absolutely breathtaking.
EA has set the in-store date for Medal of Honor Frontline for June 6, but shipping scheduling and other factors could potentially put it on shelves a few days before that. We'll have more on EA's new shooter next week.

Shenmue II On Display @ E3
|
Despite its absence from Sega's E3 list, Shenmue II for the Xbox will be at E3.
When Sega released its E3 lineup, Shenmue II was noticeably absent from the list, but in an update to the official Shenmue site, Shenmue II development team member Shin Ishikawa said that the game didn't appear on Sega's official E3 lineup list because the game will be shown at the Microsoft booth and not the Sega area. When GameSpot spoke with Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki in March, he said that the team had successfully ported over all the code to the Xbox and that it was working on ways to take advantage of the Xbox hardware.

Gamecube's Online Plans
|
A Reuters report quotes an unnamed source as stating that Nintendo Co. Ltd. will unveil plans for Internet-based gaming at the upcoming E3Expo.
Nintendo spokespeople have been virtually silent on the subject since the GameCube's launch. One may go so far as to say that Nintendo even seemed disinterested in online gaming, so this is indeed welcome news.
The GameCube has three unused ports on its underside, one of which could easily accept an add-on modem or broadband adapter.
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) and Microsoft Corp. are also expected to announce major online gaming initiatives at this years E3.
