400,000 Clog Manhattan - Demand No War

What is happening next?

Blair is finished.

Bush says anti-war protests won't deter him   With over 200,000 and all the machines ready to go, the attack could begin within days. Time is running short and Bush knows it.

If the U.S. Attacks Iraq, Make Your Opposition Known!

It is incredibly important to continue the anti-war activism at full force. Write letters to the editor - organize and attend rallies - hold signs on street corners !

The recent mass demonstrations were some of the largest anti-war protests the world has seen since the Vietnam War. They have been successful in forcing the Bush administration to consult Congress and work through the UN rather than acting unilaterally as it had originally planned. Unfortunately, the administration could decide to attack Iraq regardless of U.S. public opposition, the continued unpopularity of the war abroad, and the commencement of unimpeded inspections in Iraq.

If the bombs do start falling, we call on you to join with United for Peace & Justice and other groups around the world to get out on the streets immediately and visibly express strong opposition to the war and demand peaceful, nonviolent alternatives.

With these realities as the backdrop, enter the year 2003 hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. If the bombs do start falling, we call on you to join with United for Peace and other groups around the country to get out on the streets immediately and visibly express strong opposition to this war and demand peaceful, nonviolent alternatives.

Here Are Some Ideas for What You Can Do:

*TAKE ACTION by joining a nationally coordinated campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience with the Iraq Pledge of Resistance. For more information see http://www.peacepledge.org/resist, email [email protected], or call 301-589-2355.

*DEMONSTRATE your opposition to war by planning a march through your town’s downtown business district at 5 PM the day bombing starts or noon the next day.

*WALK OUT of classes at high schools and colleges. Call in sick to work. If our government is killing people in a far off country, there can be no business as usual here at home!

*BUILD a peace encampment that will start the evening that the U.S. bombing starts and continue as long as the U.S. is at war against Iraq. Peace encampments can be set up in front of the local federal office building or in the middle of a university campus. Activities can include teach-ins and nonviolence trainings.

*BE CREATIVE! Use art, music, drama and humor. Reach out to new constituencies. Share your ideas with others. Let a thousand flowers bloom!!

*Spread the word to the media and the general public.

We urge you to quickly organize community meetings to plan for what you will do the day of and the day after war begins, and to let community members know how they can participate.

NOW is a critical moment for the UN
Security Council. Canada and Mexico are shifting their opposition to
war. We must encourage the stalwarts to STAND FIRM.

This came through AFSC-VT:

"I just spoke with France's UN office. They are BEGGING us to flood
their offices and the offices of the other UN offices with emails to
STOP the WAR. France needs to know that Americans and Canadians are
with them on this. The same goes for all the members of the UN Security
Council, who will be deciding the fate of Iraq in just a few days." [if
not sooner]

PLEASE forward this to everyone you can. The UN Security Council email

Peace movement in Powell River Education of the people is extremely important in the fight for Peace. With propaganda and omission coming from the mainstream medias, a lot of people have no idea of what is going on. Some of the misconceptions, seriously, are:
  • we are so insulated that war will not affect us.
  • peace protesters are potential terrorists, normal people don't do things like that.
  • Saddam can not blow up the twin towers and get away with it.
  • Saddam and Bin Laden are the same person.
  • 9-11 is where you can buy pops and potato chips.
  • nuclear bombs will fix the problem.
  • war on Iraq is a reality show.
  • war is justified because gasoline is 82 cents/liter and going up.
  • war is good because it creates jobs.
  • Afganistan? What Afganistan!
  • What has just happened???

Notes -- Is Saddam Hussein a modern Hitler?

The depiction of Saddam Hussein as a modern day Hitler served to justify
the slaughter of innocent Iraqis in 1991, and is once again being used to
mobilize public opinion in support of a military strike on Iraq. The
comparision with Nazi Germany is not accurate. Iraq is an impoverished
nation. It was unable to defend itself during the Gulf War. It is much
less able to defend itself today, after the bombing of 1991 and 12
years of the trade embargo.

The US armed and supported Saddam Hussein while he was committing human rights violations. Rumsfeld 'offered help to Saddam'

-- Is Bush a modern Churchill?

-- Can modern military technology minimize the loss of life in an attack?

The US military admitted after the 1991 Gulf War that 70 percent of the
bombs missed their targets. Only 7 percent of the bombs dropped were
"smart" bombs. Even when "smart" bombs were used, their targets are
usually infrastructure, such as water filtration plants and transportation
systems. One of the consequences after the 1991 Gulf War was a malaria
epidemic that killed 100,000 Iraqi civilians.

-- What would be the environmental impact of bombing Iraq?

During the Gulf War, the US "fired 900 tons of depleted uranium into Iraq,
drenching it with permanent, radioactive contamination" ("Bombing the
cradle of civilization," David Orchard). If there are chemical weapons in
Iraq, the consequences of bombing them could be catastrophic. In 1991, the
US blew up a warehouse of chemical weapons without informing their
soldiers about the contents of the building. Since the end of the war,
many soldiers who served have suffered debilitating illness known as "gulf
war syndrome."

The US military will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons if they see fit.
The New York Times editorial writer, William Safire, said, "If Mr.
Hussein turned totally suicidal and tried germ warfare, he would invite a
nuclear response."

-- How can we stop the suffering of the Iraqi people?

Governments cannot continue a war which the majority of the citizens do
not support. The Vietnam War could not continue when the masses of people
protested against it. During the last Gulf War, millions of people
protested to end the war. In US cities, hundreds of thousands protested.
Today, many governments who supported the last Gulf War, do not support
another one.

-- Is it a 'just' war?

Under the principles of “just war”, as formulated by St Augustine of Hippo and later by St Thomas Aquinas, war can be waged only as a last resort and by a “legitimate authority”. It must be fought with “right intentions”, for example in self-defense or to redress a wrong, and with a reasonable chance of success to avoid excessive death and injury. The theory of just war also holds that civilian casualties must be avoided, that the means used must be proportionate and that the ultimate goal should be to establish a peace “preferable to what would have prevailed if the war had not been fought”.

-- What is the doctrine of 'preemption' and its implication?

The doctrine of preemption -- the idea that the United States or any other nation can legitimately attack a nation that is not imminently threatening but may be threatening in the future -- is a radical new twist on the traditional idea of self defense. It appears to be in contravention of international law and the UN Charter. And it is being tested at a time of world-wide terrorism, making many countries around the globe wonder if they will soon be on our -- or some other nation's -- hit list. High level Administration figures recently refused to take nuclear weapons off of the table when discussing a possible attack against Iraq. What could be more destabilizing and unwise than this type of uncertainty, particularly in a world where globalism has tied the vital economic and security interests of many nations so closely together?
