Jim Welch played for Colgate when that institution had its best teams. He was a powerful lineman, but his main fame was in kicking placement field goals. He was good enough to replace Berry as the Maroons three point kicker. Jim Welch kicked the placement which won for Pottsville over New York's Giants, 3-0, in 1926. In the game against Chicago's Bears he missed three placements, in the slippery mud of December weather on Wrigley Field, any one of which would have won the game and championship. |
