Russ Stein was born on April 21, 1896. He atten- ded Niles Ohio High School, Kiski Prep School, Class of 1917, and graduated from Washington and Jefferson in 1921. He played four years of football at Washington & Jefferson and was Captain in 1921. He was named to Walter Camp's All-America Team in 1921, and to Helms Hall of Fame. In the same season his brother, Herb, was in similar status as a center for Pittsburgh. Russ Stein, a Maroon tackle in 1925, after a rather discouraging pre-season practice, turned in an excellent game in the 1925 opener against Buffalo. In that en- counter, he opened up many large gaps in the line which enabled Maroons ball-carriers to run through for large yardage. As a result, Pottsville came out on the long end of a 28-0 count. Russ' outstanding line play earned him praise from members of the various NFL teams, and was a major factor in the Maroons' outstanding record of 1925. He later operated the Niles Development Co., which develops allottments and apartment buildings in Niles, Ohio. He has four children and nine grandchildren. |
