Born in Warren, Ohio on March 27, 1898, Herb now lives in Niles, Ohio. He attended Niles High School, "Kiski" Prep School from which he graduated in 1918, and the University of Pitts- burgh, graduating in 1922. He played four years of football while at "Pitt" and was Captain of the 1920 team. Named to Walter Camp's All-America First Team in 1920, Second Team in 1921, and Pitt's Hall of Honor. He and his brother "Russ" were the first brothers to make Walter Camp's All-America First Team. Herb played pro football for seven years, three of these being with the Pottsville Maroons during 1925, 1926, and 1927. While with us he was the best center in the National League in 1925. Herb Stein drew raves from players and fans alike when he performed for the Pottsville Maroons. If any one person deserves credit more than another in Pottsville's victory over the Chicago Cardinals, Herb is the one. He was the main factor in the Maroons' 21-7 victory which earned them the NFL championship. Not only did he turn in an astounding performance on offense, but on defense as well. Defensively he intercepted several passes in the final quarter which prevented Chicago from crossing the final white stripe and possibly defeating the Maroons. |
