JOSEPH A. HAUPTLY, one of nine children of the late John and Mary Wachter Hauptly, was born in Pottsville, Pa. on December 7, 1902. He attended St. John the Baptist School and was graduated from Pottsville High School and International Accountants Society of Alexander Hamilton Institute of Chicago. From 1921 through 1929 he played baseball with the Yorksville Yanks. During 1919 and 1920 he played football with the St. Clair Steam Rollers; in 1921 with the Yorkville Hose Company, the forerunner of the Pottsville Maroons; from 1922 to 1925 with the Pottsville Maroons, and hten in 1925 signed with the Frackville Buffalos. Mr. Hauptly worked for P.& R.C.& I. Company as storekeeper and chief clerk from 1918 to 1930; then trans- ferred to St. Clair Coal Company, at St. Clair, Pa., from 1930 to 1946 as a cost accountant. In 1946 and 1947 he was employed by Pottsville Castings Company as an Accountant and assistant secretary. The latter part of 1947 he operated a bituminous coal stripping company; and then in 1948 to 1963+ he managed and operated his own Public Accounting, and General Insurance Agency. Mr. Hauptly was also affiliated with H & H Stripping Co. and Glenn Worth Coal Company. In 1953 Mr. Hauptly entered politics, and he was elected alderman in the Seventh Ward of the City of Pottsville, and re-elected in 1959, for another six year term, expired in 1966. In 1961 he was elected to the office of City Council of Pottsville, for a four year term, commencing January 1, 1962, and in 1963 was Director of Parks and Public Property for the City of Pottsville. Mr. Joseph A. Hauptly still resides in Pottsville, and remains one of the few living Maroons to this day. |
