Born January 14, 1896 near Terre Haute, Indiana, Russ Hathaway attended grade school and high schooll in the coal-mining region of Dugger and Linton, Indiana. He played only a year of high school football and that was at Linton, Indiana. In 1914 he entered Indiana University and made the Freshman team. As a regular for the next three years he played fullback for two, and the last year as Captain he played tackle. In December 1917, he left Indiana Univ- ersity and joined the Navy. As an Ensign he made two trips to Europe, and was discharged in June 1919. As the first athletic director of the Linton, Indiana schools, he also taught Algebra and Geometry. Russ played his first pro football in the fall of 1919 for Pine Village, Indiana. In 1925 he went to the Pottsville Maroons and stayed through the 1926 season. During 1927 and 1928 he played and coached with the Portsmouth, Ohio team which later became the Detroit Lions. In 1928 he called it "quits" after ten years of pro ball. While at college Russell was the first man to receive the "Gimbel Medal" for devotion to studies and athletics. Russ was in the Grocery, Dairy and Meat Business until his retirement in 1952. |
