Jack played football in 1929 for Boston, and in 1930 with the Yellowjackets. At that time he switched to Baseball in the New York, Penna. and Eastern League; from 1934 to 1940 taught school. Jack managed the Hammond Organ Store as well as the Atlantic Baseball School. Married with twin sons, and another son 8 years youner. Jack Ernst quarterbacked Pottsville's Maroons for 4 consecutive seasons. The quarterback's main duty during the 20's was signal calling (but not, primarily, ballhandling). Ernst, however, was an excellent passer and also did most of the punting for the Champion Maroons. He had a punt in the Championship game against the Cardinals at Chicago, which carried a long distance and rolled to the five-yard line, at a critical time. And he had a touchdown in the 10-0 victory against a great Los Angeles club in 1926. It is believed he was the first to suggest the team be named the Maroons- because he and Berry were Lafayette men. |
