Born in Phillipsburg, N.J. on October 18, 1902, he att- ended Phillipsburg High School from 1917 to 1921. He was baseball captain and Football captain and All State End in 1920. From 1921 to 1925 he attended Lafayette College where he was both football and baseball captain for four years. He was All-American End in 1924. Charlie played with the Pottsville Maroons during 1925 and 1926. His three-point placement kicking won games for the Pottsville Maroons, notably during the game with the Four Horsemen for the World Championship. His right shoe, bronzed and mounted, became the symbol of Maroons in later years as Joe Zacko (official sporting good supplier to the club) waged war with the NFL to regain the thwarted title. Charlie was a baseball catcher with the Philadelphia "A's in 1925; Portland, Oregon, 1926; Dallas, Texas, 1927; Boston Red Sox, 1928, 29, 30 & 31; Chicago White Sox, 1932 and 1933; Philadelphia "A's" as a player pitcher-coach 1937, 38, 39 & 40. He was an umpire in the International League in 1941. As an American League umpire from 1942 until 1961 he is considered the number one baseball umpire of BOTH leagues. He retired in 1963. |
