Henry Benkert attended East Side High School, Newark in 1921; a four letter man. Captain - football; Captain - basketball; Captain - baseball; Cross-country; All State football 1918 (halfback). He attended Rutgers University 1921-1925; three letter man in footballm basketball and lacrosse. Cap- tain - Freshman basketball; All-American Lacrosse 1924 (first attack); Football - high scorer in U.S. 1924; All- American football by concensus of 316 newspapermen 1924; longest run in the East 1924 (88 yds. from scrimmage against Lebanon Valley). He played pro-football with the Providence Steam Rollers 1924; New York Giants 1925; Pottsville Maroons (World Champions 1925); Orange Tornadoes (player and coach) 1927- 1933. He was a catcher for Nutley Lycum, Elizabeth Continentals and St. Rose of Lima (Nwk.) baseball teams, and played basketball for Nutley Lycem. Henry coached Seton Hall Prep (State Champs 1929); Woodridge High 1930-31 (State Champs 1930); Orange High 1932-39; Ass't Coach at Rutgers 1940-51. He received his Masters Degree in Education from Rutgers University (1948); Director of Interscholastic Athletics (Orange High) 1958; Teacher at Orange High School - 1932. |
