MAROONS  ON  DECK
IN  FINE  SHAPE  FOR  FRIDAY

By: H.C. Hoffman, Asst. Editor

The hotel where the players are stopping is located
within short riding distance of the park, but far from
the center of the city.  Rauch says the lineup that
usually starts the game will be put in tomorrow, but he
is so well pleased with Mahrt that the new backfield
man will get in for about half the game.
Coach Rauch let the boys enjoy themselves enroute
in the afternoon.  When the evening meal had been
eaten, he gathered the Maroons together and then there
was a long blackboard talk and a general discussion of
the combat and plan of attack.  Captain Charlie Berry
gave the boys a "pep" talk.  Charlie gets half his salary
from for playing, and the other half for keeping the
boys pepped up.  After his talk last night, and seeing
how he has performed on the grid, we know that he is
earning his salary in both departments.
When Clarence Beck, captain of last year's
Maroons joined the team at Altoona, he was given a
warm reception by his fellow players.
The Maroons were tucked in their beds at an early
hour last night, and when they awoke,  they were
nearing Chicago.
Trainer Eddie Gillespie took good care of the boys,
rubbing them down and looking after their wants.
Eddie spend a lot of time working on Tony Latone's
elbow, which was injured in the Frankford game.  The
rest seemed to do Toney a lot of good and when he
awoke this morning he reported to Coach Rauch that
his arm was much better.  This good news was matter
for rejoicing as Toney is being banked on with Wentz
to crush the Cardinal.
The Cardinals know all about the bone-crushing
Latone and Wentz, and they have worked out a line
defense which they think will hold the two powerful
Pottsville backfield men.
The Cardinals are not a high scoring outfit, but are
regarded here as a team witha stonewall defense.
It is surprising the amount of information regarding
the Cardinals that is being offered to the Maroons.  A
lot of the dope being received comes from good
football authorities, and no doubt Coach Rauch had all
this in mind when he takes the Maroons out for the
limbering up exercises this afternoon.

    WITH POTTSVILLE MAROONS AT CHICAGO,
2 P.M., Dec. 5 - The Maroons arrived here at 9:07
a.m. and were taken to the Cooper-Carlton Hotel,
where they will make their headquarters.  They are
all in the pink of condition and cofident that they can
win from the Cardinals tomorrow.  The field at the
White Sox ball park was in good condition today,
frozen hard, with the faintest trace of snow.  Colder
weather is forecast for Sunday, with an ice storm,
which will make decidedly unfavorable conditions
for the game.
Manager Striegal was called by telephone from
Phila. by the Chicago Bears' management, offering
the Maroons a game with the Grange club at Chicago,
Dec. 20, if they beat the Cardinals.  Striegal accepted,
providing the Bears also win all their scheduled games.
If the Bears win all their games they will then be tied
with Pottsville for first place, providing the Maroons
win here tomorrow.  This would then be a champion-
ship game of the league and the country.  The Bears
management is also desirous of having the Maroons
travel through the South with them in a series of games
if the Pottsville boys knock off the Cardinals.
Coach Rauch took the club to the White Sox park
at two o'clock this afternoon, and they intended to put
in about two hours with signal drills and getting back
their legs after the long ride.
The Associated Press office here has looked after
the wire facilities for the report of the game for the
"Republican" and Pottsville fans Sunday.  The direct
wire is run from the press stand and will be dictated
to the Operator just as the plays are made, so that the
services will be instantaneous with the play on the
field here.
A small blizzard is raging in southern Illinois this
morning and is headed toward Chicago.  The predict-
ions are for several inches of snow.
The newspapers of this city are rating Pottsville
as one of the best clubs in the country and are not
over-confident in predicting a victory for the Cardinals.
The league leaders have been practicing several hours
daily and expect  to be in the best form displayed this
year.
