Calls 'Em

WHEN THE BALTIMORE COLTS beat the New York Giants, 23-17,
after eight minutes of sudden-death overtime in 1958, it was reliably
reported as the longest championship game in NFL history.
Turns out now that wasn't quite right.  The longest tilt in title history
started in 1925 and still is being played.  In fact it will continue at least
until sometime this spring.
Ironically, the team that scored the most points in this strange contest
turned out to be the loser- of the NFL title.
Or at least, the victor still looks like the long-run loser with the issue
hanging in doubt before a committee.  (And, that's about as high as you
can hang.)
There is no doubt about the final score.  It was: "Pottsville 9,
Four Horsemen 7."
The Four Horsemen were the Notre Dame immortals - Harry
Stuhldreher, Jim Crowley, Don Miller and Mike Layden - and they
weren't going it alone.  They had the Seven Mules along for company
and, incidentally, any blocking and tackling duties which might occur.
And, who was Pottsville?  Good question.
None other than the Pottsville (Pa.) Maroons, fresh from a playoff
victory over the Chicago Cardinals which was supposedly for the
NFL championship.
