This is no ordinary rope. It was made entirely of human hair donated by female devotees. It was used to move the massive wooden beams of the hall during it's reconstruction in the 19th century. Ordinary rope was not strong enough for the task.

Having been spoiled by the 24 hour lifestyle of Tokyo it came as a shock to find all the temples and places of interest close around 4:30!.
So...enough of the culture. Let's play Pac Man.
Having spent way too much in the arcade, we spent a pleasant half an hour walking and sitting by the river.
Note the small, crane like bird to the left of Rod and Stephen. We watched it hunting for small fish.
After dark we walked along one of Kyoto's main shopping streets. We stopped for a coffee in Starbucks before the long and pleasant walk back to the hotel.
